From 1949 Porsche had only manufactured one model production car in Stuttgart, the Porsche 356.
The replacement for this old reliable standard would arrive in  1963 in a more powerful version.  This was to be the replacement for the powerful 356 Carrera 2, and offered up a 130 hp six cylinder motor.
The 911, initially named the 901 Porsche prototype was first shown on September 12, 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.  This car was known as Porsche #13326 for this show.
By November Porsche #13327 was completed for testing and also possibly to show at Geneva the following spring.
After the first showing Peugeot protested the use of the 901 name as being too similar to the models they produced.  The Porsche  board of directors decided to change this new model designation from 901 to the 911.
So there were at least two 1963 901 Porsche prototypes built.
An estimated 125 cars were completed by the end of 1963 are considered to be 901 Porches.
In 1964 the first 232  911 production cars were built.  So finding one of these survivors would be expensive unless you are lucky enough to find a missing one in a barn somewhere.!

From 2013-2015 there should be a lot of interest in the automotive world honoring the classic lines of the very first 911 and 912 Porsche, which were built from 1963-1965.  The 1966 and later models have slight differences.
Now would be the time to buy a 1965 or older 901, 911, or 912 before prices skyrocket!
In 2015 the celebration will continue for the 1965 Porsche 911  models, which are also very rare to find.
2015 will also be the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 912, which used the 1965 356 SC motor and outsold the 911's for the first few years.

The Porsche 912 model is quite rare, especially the 1965 models which were built in May through July, 1965.   A Porsche memo announced this new 912 on 4/27/1965 for German delivery, and would be available in October,1965 for overseas delivery to the United States.
At first the 912 was only available in Europe, so those early 912's have kilometer speed gauges.
If you are lucky enough to spot one of these cars you can see that the dash is painted the same color as the exterior paint, just like the Porsche 356.
Only a handful of these early 1965 models were built to USA specs and shipped to America  as they had to be picked up directly at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart by their owners.
The 1966 Porsche 912 models were built after August 1965 and exported to dealers throughout the United States in October of 1965.
The best way to tell a 1965 from a 1966 912 is to look at the paint code.  This code is listed on the drivers side door pillar.
If it is a 64xx code it is a 1965 model, and if it is a 66xx code you have a 1966 model.

The July 1965 issue of "Road and Track" article states:
"The 356 -C and 356-SC are scheduled to remain in production until the end of 1965--but only export to America.  For European sale at the present time and for export 'later'.  Porsche introduced the 912 as a companion model to the already announced 911.  The body / chassis and suspension are identical but the 912 uses the 356-SC engine in place of the new single overhead camshaft 6-cyl unit of the 911"

Porsche 912's were only produced from 1965-1969, and are very seldom seen anymore.  Do a search on Ebay by model number and you will see there are twice as many 356 Porsches listed than 912's.
Finally, do a search for 911 Porsches and there are hundreds for sale.

It is anticipated that Porsche will hold several special events for the 911’s 50th Anniversary.
At the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2013 there most likely will be at least one special-edition 911 model.
